Make a Roots Connection
in the Frith Photo Archive

A picture of a street in your home town can trigger memories of childhood that are pleasant to recall. The particular street depicted may not have been particularly important to you but it will still act as a catalyst to memories associated with living in that town.

The Frith archive provides an amazingly detailed visual record of over 7,000 towns and villages, as well as illustrating the enormous social and structural changes which have taken place in Britain since 1860. Whilst some of the photographs are undoubtedly artistically outstanding, the real value of the archive lies in its scale. There is no other archive which can illustrate this period of British history so extensively or to such a high quality.

Every image is available in various formats as framed, mounted or poster prints, in sepia or black and white. They are also developing a gallery section of the site, and are in the process of acquiring the rights to other collections.

Plus there are over 250 local history book titles (which include a voucher for a free Frith print of any image in the book) that have been published by The Frith Book Company. These cover British towns, counties and there are a series of themed and general interest books, such as Brave New Britain, or Scottish Castles. Many titles are available in both hardback and softback editions.

They also stock a collection of superb reproductions of hand tinted engraved maps by the Victorian cartographer, Samuel Lewis, covering the traditional counties of England and Wales, and a single map is also available covering each of Scotland and Ireland....

The Frith archive was founded by Francis Frith, the pioneer Victorian photographer, in 1860 and today contains over 365,000 photographs of some 7,000 towns and villages throughout Britain. Taken between 1860 and 1970 these form a topographical record of Britain without equal and is recognised as probably the only photographic collection of national importance in private hands in Britain today.
