Rootsmap specialises in providing Surname Distribution Maps for the UK and Ireland, to help in the search for a particular surname. Surname Distribution Maps are a useful tool to help with your family research - and a colourful pictorial image to go with your notes, certificates and records. A surname distribution map shows the incidence of a particular name in a given area. RootsMap Infill Maps are based on the 1881 census and show the distribution of a surname, by county, throughout mainland UK. Infill Maps of Ireland are also available based on Griffith’s Valuation 1847 to 1864. RootsMap cannot guarantee to pinpoint where a particular name originated but it can produce maps of each county that show the highest incidence of a name per parish. This may suggest the likely origins of the name and is also useful in directing the search for ancestors. It is recognised academic theory that even with migration, enough people of a particular surname tend to stay in and around the same place, so that counties showing the highest occurrence of a name are more likely to prove fruitful in searching for ancestors of that name. RootsMap has developed a methodology so that provided there are sufficient entries, heads of household are extracted from the data, in order to provide the closest match to the male line. Maps produced and published by RootsMap are available as A4 (similar to US Letter size) and can either be downloaded and printed by you immediately after payment, or we can dispatch your map to you by 1st class post - especially useful if you would like to have your map laminated or printed as A3.
